I swore all eyes were on us later that night when we walked hand in hand into Pele’s, like Brig had suggested. I was taking my wife on a date, and now the entire restaurant seemed to stare at us as we followed a host to the table. They might have stared because Nakiki was a small place prone to gossip. It might have been because Emi had gone home to change before going out and now was a picture of sexy, cool-girl perfection. She wore a sweet lingerie-style top, see-through lace, and a leather miniskirt… and high-top Chuck Taylors. Emi would try but never to the point of not being herself.

And that was my wife. The woman who every man in this room would have killed to be with. Maybe that was me projecting.

She sat opposite me, tugging at her very short skirt. In fact, since I’d complimented her legs, she’d had them out every single time I’d seen her. On so many levels, I appreciated it. I wasn’t above eye candy for one, but for two, it felt a bit like a white flag between us.

She leaned in close, her voice low. “You should expect Dom to come over at some point.”

“Who’s Dom?”

“Dom’s a family friend, and he owns the place.” She scrunched her nose. “How do you not know who Dom is? He’s like, a local legend?”

I shrugged. “I don’t come here. Or get out that much at all really, unless it’s work related.” I picked up the drinks menu and perused. “So, why are you telling me about Dom?”

“Just… he might remember you being here with Leilani. And maybe us arguing. He’s like my cool uncle. One of my dad’s brahs. So he might eye you up.”

Emi had no clue how wild an artist on a rampage could be. I could deal with an eyeing up from Dom.

“You look nice,” I said, still staring at the menu.

She glanced down at her top. “Thank you.”

I wanted to say so much more than that—nice. What a shitty, empty compliment. Like I didn’t have a vocabulary to choose from. Tempting. Slinky. Seductive. Better choices.

“Can I get you drinks?” a server, who felt suddenly at the side of our table, asked.

“I’ll have virgin mojito, please.” Emi beamed.

The server nodded. “And you?”

“A Coke.”

She wrote the order down and walked away.

“A Coke?” she asked. “That sounds kind of pedestrian for a man like you, Raf. Last time you were here, you brought some fancy bottle to impress my sister. And were wearing expensive shoes. I’m already an old one…”

She joked, but everything below the belt surged, thinking about her being jealous again. That flustered burst of emotion had been… sexy.

Thinking about her in that way wasn’t a good idea. I changed the subject. “So you have a problem with fancy things?”

“Me?”

“Yes you. You have an issue with people having money?”

She hesitated.

“Sorry. That should have been a statement, not a question. You take a lot of shots at me, a lot are money related.
